A specific reason hasn’t been given at the time of writing for the cancellation of the sequel. At the time, Versus Evil said the team had “reached a limit on what we can do” in “regards to the limitations of the hardware”. The news comes a year after the publisher stopped releasing patches for the first game. However, though the Xbox and PlayStation versions would arrive in 2020, the Nintendo Switch version suffered multiple delays. The RPG had originally planned to arrive in 2019 when it was first announced the game would come to consoles. An employee responded to a query with the following “Hey there! Unfortunately, after much deliberation, we have decided not to move forward with Pillars of Eternity II: Deadfire for the Nintendo Switch.”

Publisher Versus Evil has abandoned plans to bring 2018 Obsidian RPG Pillars of Eternity 2: Deadfire to the Nintendo Switch.
